What Horses Can Teach Us About the Bible and God

I have the privilege of working with some horses, and I cannot tell you the joy I have just by being around them. They can teach us so much, and they know how we are feeling before we even say a word. I cannot tell you how many times I have just been hugged by them, as I cried into their necks. They help heal a part of me every time I am there.

What Horses Can Teach Us About the Bible and God

There is something majestic and humbling about horses. Their strength, beauty, and loyalty capture our hearts and stir something deep inside of us. Throughout history, horses have played a vital role in human life—carrying burdens, traveling long distances, and standing beside us in both work and battle. Interestingly, the Bible also mentions horses over 150 times, often using them to teach us spiritual truths. If we look closely, horses can point us to the very heart of God and His Word.

1. Strength Under Control (Meekness)

A horse is powerful—able to pull weight far beyond its own and run with incredible speed. Yet, the most admirable horse is not the wild one, but the one who has been trained, whose power is guided by the rider’s hand. This is a beautiful picture of meekness, which is not weakness but strength under control.

Jesus said in Matthew 5:5, “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.” Like a horse that submits to the reins, we too are called to submit our lives to God’s guidance. When we surrender our strength and will to Him, He directs our path in ways that lead to true peace and purpose.

2. Trust and Relationship

A horse does not naturally trust a rider. Trust is built over time—through care, consistency, and presence. Similarly, our relationship with God grows as we walk with Him daily. Just as a horse learns to recognize the voice, touch, and cues of its owner, we learn to recognize God’s voice through His Word and Spirit.

John 10:27 reminds us, “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.” The same way a horse follows the lead of its trusted rider, we are invited to follow God’s leading, trusting that He knows the best way forward.

3. Running the Race with Endurance

Horses are symbols of endurance. They were created to run long distances, carrying burdens and pressing forward even when tired. In Scripture, Paul compares the Christian life to a race, urging us to keep running with perseverance.

Hebrews 12:1 says, “Let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith.” Like a horse that keeps moving forward no matter the terrain, we are called to press on in faith, even when life feels heavy.

4. A Picture of God’s Majesty

Finally, horses reflect the majesty and glory of their Creator. Their beauty and power are awe-inspiring, reminding us of God’s greatness. Job 39:19-20 describes them vividly:
“Do you give the horse his might? Do you clothe his neck with a mane? Do you make him leap like the locust? His majestic snorting is terrifying.”

God uses the image of the horse to remind us that all strength and beauty come from Him. When we look at the power of a horse, we see just a glimpse of the One who created it.

A Short Prayer

Lord, thank You for the beauty of Your creation and the lessons You teach us through it. Help me to be like a trained horse—strong, yet surrendered to Your will. Build my trust in You, strengthen me to run the race with endurance, and open my eyes to Your majesty in all things. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
